This is really simple, all backlit LED's have black crush where they lose the details in the shadows, it's a black blob of nothing. The black level has never been lower than 0.03 with light elements in the frame on any back lit LED.
Having no picture on doesn't mean the screen can show perfect black at all. The best new edge lit LED this year is at 0.08 whereas the calibrated D8005 had 0.03, equivalent the black level of the C650, a 3 year old LCD from Samsung. It seems like they have focused on color accuracy instead of black level this year. The problem is that a LCD will never go below 0.01 in terms of black level unless they introduce the Sharp Elite from the states which is the best LED ever with the most dimming zones. It still suffers from black crush, wrong colors, bad viewing angles and so on and so forth.
Anyway there hasn't been a better reviewed television than the VT50 since the Kuro KRP-500 in 2009 which is still this site's reference TV along with avforums, avsforums, highdefjunkies, hdtvtest.co.uk etc etc. I'll take professional calibrators measurements and knowledge over one persons opinion particularly since it has been years since a television of this years Panasonics quality has been in store.
Every television last year was average and it was just a matter of preference whether or not you ended up with LED or Plasma, the blacks were not that different, the colors were off for the most part excluding a couple of models, green blobs, clouding, jerky movement, bleeding, buzzing etc etc.
It's really not hard to see either, anyone can enter their local Elgiganten or whatever store you have down there in Denmark, go up to the VT/GT50 from the side when it's on THX Cinema/bright mode and watch the correct picture for the first time in years.
There hasn't been one customer in our store that hasn't agreed after looking at it that it's way better than anything we have hanging close by, the PM670, ES8005, LM760, ES8005 Plasma LM960, ES6805 etc etc.
We got burn-in on the VT50 after a week of displaying the TV2 Premier League logo when it was on THX Bright mode, so break in time is adviced or switch to THX cinema mode and switch signals every now and then
