First of all, my apologies for using English. Flatpanels.DK is a great resource, and well worth struggling with the Danish-English translation. (I use <http://beta.visl.sdu.dk/visl/da/tools/t ... _da2en.php>).

My question:
Among monitors for the general public, several have excellent DelatE characteristics after calibration. For example: Samsung 971P, Samsung 215TW, Viewsonic VV2025wm, Viewsonic VP930B. Why do you think the Samsung 971P is superior for graphic work? What should be taken into consideration beyond DeltaE ?

The deltaE only tells you how "wrong" the monitor is at the specific colors represented in the test - not how well it produces all hues of e.g. yellow or light blue. Yes it is a good indication of capabilities, but the Lacie Blue Eye is not suitable for testing professional monitors for serious photo editing - it lacks much information about the total color space that you have to deduce from the CIE diagramme.

Most VA panels can be calibrated to a deltaE below 1, but this does not tell you that the S-PVA panel in fact has difficulties with the dynamic range of the colors when viewed heads on.

We did not rate the 971P superior for graphic use - we just rated it suitable for this purpose. There are many other monitors that are far more capable.

Thank you very much for your response. Indeed, you did not really rate the Samsung 971p superior for graphic work. You simply recommended it for that purpose a little more than the Viewsonic VX2025wm.
Like most amateurs, I do realize that monitors built and sold for graphic work are the best choice for that type of work, but cannot justify the expense of buying a professional monitor.
So, the question always is: what general use monitors may have the most desirable characteristics?? DeltaE is only one small piece of the puzzle. What are the others?

A good idea is always to look at the colorcharts we have included in our free monitor test tool. You will find them under "Color reproduction" in the test and here you have a chance to determine the monitors ability to differentiate the hues of the primary colors. This is very important for graphical use. The color gradients also tells you if banding is a severe issue for that particular monitor, which cannot be seen from the deltaE charts.

I recommend that you use the test when visiting stores (it can be accessed online via a normal browser).

A good black reproduction could also be desirable, but the monitors that have the best colors (S-IPS) unfortunately also have a poor contrast i.e. a high brightness of the black color, so sometimes it is a bit of a tradeoff.

Thanks for those tips. I find guidance on this topic is hard to find, even on sites with extensive testing of monitors.
If you have time for it, there is one last question, as you probably expect: among current general-use monitors, what would be good candidates for amateur photography and graphic work.
I wonder how many readers are curious about this.

Usually the recommendations can be deduced from the individual articles at a given site, since they often use some kind of rating system - we have chosen not to use this, since any rating will be more or less invalid once any new monitor comes along and sets a new standard. For the same reason we have decided just to keep the list up-to-date our selves and add/delete monitors from the list when needed.

Please keep in mind that our recommendation are based on our experiences and that there might easily be another monitor out there that will suit your need just as well - we just don't have sufficient data to include it on the list.
