Over 2000 folk i Hollywood, heriblandt prominente navne som David Fincher, Denis Villeneuve, J.J. Abrams og Joaquin Phoenix, protesterer i et åbent brev mod Paramounts opkøb af Warner.
Brevet blev udsendt i går og i skrivende stund har knap 2500 personer, som er involveret professionelt i Hollywood, underskrevet det. Det er alt fra instruktører og producere til skuespillere og filmteknikere. Brevet kan findes i sin helhed nederst.
De er utrygge ved at Paramounts planer om at købe filmstudiet Warner Bros og HBO Max i en handel til 111 mia. dollar. Dette kan føre til fyringer og koncentration af magt i medielandskabet, mener de, hvorfor de ønsker handlen blokeret.
- "Denne transaktion vil yderligere koncentrere et allerede koncentreret medielandskab og reducere konkurrencen på et tidspunkt, hvor vores brancher – og de publikum, vi betjener – mindst har råd til det. Resultatet vil være færre muligheder for skabere, færre jobs på tværs af produktionsøkosystemet, højere omkostninger og mindre valgfrihed for publikum i USA og resten af verden. Bekymrende nok vil fusionen reducere antallet af store amerikanske filmstudier til blot fire."
Flere filmstudier end tidligere
Gruppen af Hollywood-folk siger, at fusionen vil reducere antallet af store amerikanske filmstudier til fire. Det er en reference til 'Big Six', der i sin tid dækkede over 20th Century Fox, Columbia Pictures (Sony), Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros Pictures og Walt Disney Pictures.
20th Century Fox er sidenhen blevet opkøbt af Disney, mens Warner Bros altså nu står til at blive overtaget af Paramount, fordi Netflix trak sig.
Argumentet om reduktion af filmstudier tåler dog ikke kritisk eftersyn. Hollywood-gruppens argumenter tager alene udgangspunkt i biografmarkedet.
Netflix er i dag det største amerikanske filmstudie målt på antal film, samtidig med, at Amazon – der ejer MGM – og Apple er begyndt at producere store og mellemstore film til biograf eller streaming.

Paramount svarer
Paramount har allerede lovet mindst 30 biograffilm årligt og fremlagt planer om at kombinere HBO Max med egne streamingtjenester.
I en skriftlig udtalelse til Variety har Paramount svaret følgende til kritikken fra Hollywood:
- "Vi forstår de bekymringer, der er opstået som følge af de forstyrrelser, som COVID, indtoget af big tech og ændringer i forbrugeradfærd har medført for vores branche, men vi lover dette: Paramount er fortsat dybt engageret i talent, og denne fusion styrker både forbrugernes valgmuligheder og konkurrencen og skaber større muligheder for skabere, publikum og de lokalsamfund, de lever og arbejder i."
Paramounts opkøb af Warner går tidligst igennem hen mod slutningen af 2026. Det skal først godkendes af konkurrencemyndighederne.

| As filmmakers, documentarians, and professionals across the movie and television industry, we write to express our unequivocal opposition to the proposed Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger.
This transaction would further consolidate an already concentrated media landscape, reducing competition at a moment when our industries—and the audiences we serve—can least afford it. The result will be fewer opportunities for creators, fewer jobs across the production ecosystem, higher costs, and less choice for audiences in the United States and around the world. Alarmingly, this merger would reduce the number of major U.S. film studios to just four.
Our industry is already under severe strain, in large part due to prior waves of consolidation. We have witnessed a steep decline in the number of films produced and released, alongside a narrowing of the kinds of stories that are financed and distributed. Increasingly, a small number of powerful entities determine what gets made—and on what terms—leaving creators and independent businesses with fewer viable paths to sustain their work.
Media consolidation has accelerated the disappearance of the mid-budget film, the erosion of independent distribution, the collapse of the international sales market, the elimination of meaningful profit participation, and the weakening of screen credit integrity.
Together, these factors threaten the sustainability of the entire creative community. That includes endangering the professional lives of the tens of thousands of workers who help make up that community in predominantly small businesses and independent companies embedded in local economies and communities nationwide.
We are deeply concerned by indications of support for this merger that prioritize the interests of a small group of powerful stakeholders over the broader public good. The integrity, independence, and diversity of our industry would be grievously compromised.
Competition is essential for a healthy economy and a healthy democracy. So is thoughtful regulation and enforcement. Media consolidation has already weakened one of America's most vital global industries—one that has long shaped culture and connected people around the world.
Fortunately, someone is doing something about all this. California Attorney General Rob Bonta and his colleagues in other states are reportedly scrutinizing the merger and considering legal action to block it. We are grateful for their leadership, and stand ready to support all efforts to preserve competition, protect jobs, and ensure a vibrant future for our industry, for American culture, and for our single most significant export. |
